Atlus used its PAX West 2026 panel to answer the casting question Persona 4 Revival fans had been chewing on for months. The studio rolled a sizzle reel for Kanji Tatsumi, the Inaba delinquent with a soft centre and one of the most-discussed characters in the whole game, and the name attached to it belonged to neither Troy Baker nor Matt Mercer — the two actors who carried the role through the original release and its expanded versions. Kanji’s new English voice is Daman Mills.
Mills is best known outside the JRPG bubble as the current voice of Frieza in the Dragon Ball franchise, and he has game credits in Borderlands 3, Final Fantasy VII Remake and Yakuza Kiwami 3. He is also a familiar hire at Atlus specifically, which makes the pick look less like a swerve and more like an in-house promotion:
- Aogami in Shin Megami Tensei 5
- Madam Ginko in Soul Hackers 2
- Takaya Sakaki in Persona 3 Reload
- Auch in Unicorn Overlord
Atlus is recasting the entire ensemble for this remake rather than reassembling the old booth, so Kanji was always going to change hands. The interesting part is which hands, because Kanji is the role with the least margin for error. Beyond the Baker–Mercer legacy, he is one of the earliest prominent video game characters to work through his own gender identity on screen, and the way other party members — Yosuke in particular — treat him has aged into a genuine sore spot. Atlus has said the remake will address that.
Mills’ read on the character, delivered at the panel, suggests the studio hired someone who has thought about it: “While he has a more masculine-leaning approach with, like, his whole identity, he also has some femininity to him as well that I really like and admire. Though, I think for Kanji, it leads to some insecurities overall within the story, and for him, it makes him a little bit afraid because it’s not necessarily a social norm. But we gradually see him sort of progress through that within the story and sort of face those trials and growth, and it has just been such an incredible thing to experience, and I really enjoy the character very much.”
The same panel showed a quality-of-life addition called Pathfinder, an optional navigation aid that points players toward the next floor of a dungeon and can be switched off by anyone who would rather get lost in the TV world the old-fashioned way.
The release details are locked in. Persona 4 Revival arrives on February 18, 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows and Steam, and it lands on Xbox Game Pass on day one. Character trailers have been running in both English and Japanese versions, with Rise already confirmed as Abby Trott in English and Rie Kugimiya in Japanese — a reminder that Atlus intends to reintroduce this cast one voice at a time.
