The last part of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy is going to be huge. Director Naoki Hamaguchi has given the first estimate of how big it will be: “Things are still getting worked out, but it’s probably going to be around 200GB of game,” he told Video Games Chronicle. That number explains why Final Fantasy VII Revelation will not come complete on disc, even though the physical edition will be sold.
The disc arithmetic
A PS5 disc holds up to 100GB. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth fit on two Blu-ray discs, and fans assumed Revelation would do the same. An install of around 200GB leaves no room on two discs, though, and anything bigger would take a third. Square Enix chose not to go that way, and buyers of the boxed game will need to download data on day one.
Hamaguchi explained the decision to IGN in an earlier interview. The team did talk about using the same disc setup as Rebirth, but “if we were to do that, it would mean that we would have to make a compromise in terms of the fidelity and the quality” of the game. He added: “We didn’t want to make any compromises for the game.” He also noted that “each platform has limitations when it comes to physical media capacity”, and said that cutting quality back to fit everything on disc “would ultimately not be in the best interest of many fans.”
Why sell a physical edition at all
Hamaguchi still sees value in a boxed copy: “even though the game will not be on the full disc, in the position we’re in, because discs may be dying out, or maybe staying, with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, we definitely wanted to deliver some kind of physical product.” Not everyone agrees. Some fans have pointed out that PlayStation handles multi-disc releases without trouble, and they doubt that disc capacity is the real limit.
Key facts
- Release date: April 8, 2027. The date was announced at a PlayStation State of Play in early September 2026.
- Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
- Install size: “around 200GB” for the higher-quality version and around 130GB on Switch 2. Both figures are estimates.
- Physical copies: sold, but a download is required on day one.
- Early Access: the Premium Edition lets players start 24 hours before release and also includes the Story Expansion Pass.
- After launch: story content about Vincent and Sephiroth is planned.
For a trilogy whose 1997 original shipped on several PlayStation discs, a finale that no longer fits on any number of discs marks the change well. The key point is that the size is still an estimate. Hamaguchi says it is still being worked out, so the final number for April 8, 2027 may differ.
