Few animals are as camera-friendly as the giant panda, and few have carried as much weight as a symbol. Giant Panda: Portraits, Wild Habitats, and Untold Stories, a new hardback from ACC Art Books, leans into both. It is a coffee-table photo book and, at the same time, an official account of how China brought its national treasure back from the brink. PetaPixel featured the title on October 11, 2026.
The author credit is unusual for a photo book. Instead of a single photographer, the cover names The National Forestry and Grassland Administration, China, the state agency in charge of the country’s forests, grasslands and protected areas. That tells you what to expect: a curated, institutional view of panda conservation, built from a broad archive rather than one person’s portfolio.
What’s inside
- Over 80 photographs of pandas, from close portraits to their wild habitats
- Texts drawn from interviews with experts, philanthropists and international partners
- A whole chapter of stories about individual pandas and their personalities
- Coverage of the conservationists’ work, including pandas being released back into the wild
The publisher’s own framing is clear. It calls the giant panda “among the most significant global symbols of nature conservation” and points out that the species has been around for over eight million years. The book sets out to be both a visual showcase and a fact-filled guide to China’s panda programme. Its full description promises a look at “the important and challenging work of the conservationists, and the incredible accomplishments they achieve when pandas are returned to the wild.”
The individual-panda chapter is probably the hook for most readers. Anyone who has followed famous panda cubs on social media knows the appeal of giving these bears names and personalities. Rewilding is the less cuddly but more important side of the story. Releasing captive-bred animals into the mountains is hard, and pictures from that work are much rarer than shots from breeding-centre nurseries.

At this size and page count, it is a serious object for the shelf rather than a quick gift book. For wildlife photographers it also works as a case study: it shows how long-term conservation is documented when the photographs and the institution telling the story come from the same side.
