Rogue Trooper. Duncan Jones brings 2000 AD's blue soldier to animated life
SHARE

Duncan Jones, the mind behind Moon and Warcraft, has finally cracked open one of British sci-fi’s most iconic properties. His animated adaptation of Rogue Trooper, the long-running 2000 AD comic about a genetically engineered supersoldier abandoned on a poisoned battlefield, is a film that manages to be funny, gruesome and quietly political all at once.

The movie held its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 22, 2026, arriving as a fully completed independent feature. That independent status matters here. As of April 21, 2026, the film still had no distributor and was being shopped around, with the creative team hoping to secure a release later in the year. For a project of this pedigree, it’s a reminder that even seasoned directors with cult classics on their résumés still fight for a screen.

The cast reads like a British comedy dream team, and Jones has clearly leaned into that. Sean Bean anchors the voice work, while Jermaine Clement and Matt Berry bring their distinctive comic timing to the mix. Anyone familiar with Berry’s delivery can already imagine the tonal balance at play: this is not a po-faced war story, even if the source material trades in bleak themes of endless conflict, disposable soldiers and corporate warmongering.

Running 121 minutes, the film is a British animated military science fiction feature, and Jones has spoken about his ambitions for translating the comic’s grim Nu-Earth setting into animation. The Rogue Trooper concept has always been ripe for adaptation, following a blue-skinned Genetic Infantryman who carries the digitised personalities of his fallen comrades in his equipment. It’s a premise that blends splatter-heavy action with genuine pathos, and it’s easy to see why the material appealed to a director drawn to isolated, morally complicated protagonists.

What makes this adaptation notable is its tone. Jones appears to have embraced the comic’s satirical streak rather than sanding it down for mass appeal. The result, according to early impressions from the Annecy screening, is a film that swings between graphic violence and sharp humour without losing its underlying message about how societies treat those they send to fight.

  • Director: Duncan Jones
  • Source: 2000 AD’s Rogue Trooper
  • Cast: Sean Bean, Jermaine Clement, Matt Berry
  • Runtime: 121 minutes
  • Premiere: Annecy International Animation Film Festival, June 22, 2026

For fans of British sci-fi comics, this is a rare chance to see a beloved property handled by someone who genuinely understands it. Whether a distributor steps up to give Rogue Trooper the wide release it deserves remains the open question — but the film itself is done, and by all accounts it delivers exactly the mix of grit and wit Jones promised.
