Canon has been famously protective of its RF mount, blocking full-frame third-party autofocus lenses and leaving mirrorless owners with fewer choices than they’d like. Megadap just found a clever way around part of that problem — and it’s aimed at some of the most characterful glass ever made.
The Megadap M2RF, announced on July 23, 2026, is billed as the world’s first adapter that turns manual-focus Leica M-Mount lenses into autofocus primes on Canon EOS R Series bodies, both APS-C and full-frame. And before Leica purists get too territorial, remember that M-Mount is a broad church: Voigtländer, Zeiss and modern makers like Light Lens Lab all build lenses in this mount. Every one of them is fair game here.
The trick is mechanical rather than magical. Like similar AF adapters, the M2RF uses a high-speed coreless motor driving an electronic helical system that physically shifts the entire lens back and forth to achieve focus. Dual Hall effect sensors keep track of position, and — crucially — the adapter talks to the camera well enough to play nicely with Canon’s acclaimed Dual Pixel CMOS AF, including Eye Detection, Subject Tracking, Face Priority and continuous autofocus. A physical AF/MF toggle lets you jump back to manual whenever the mood strikes.
That helical mechanism moves the attached lens by up to 4.5mm, which doubles as a party trick: like an extension tube, it shortens the minimum focusing distance for extra macro reach. There are also selectable macro and infinity focus modes to suit your shooting.
Megadap didn’t forget the details that make manual glass usable on a modern body. A four-step aperture lever lets you sync the camera’s displayed f-stop with the lens’s real aperture, and electronic contacts handle EXIF transmission — the adapter can store the lens name, focal length and aperture for up to four different lenses.
