Stow. The free app that finally tells you when it's safe to format a card

Every photographer and videographer knows the small ritual of dread that comes with hitting format. Did that card really back up to all your drives? Is the footage safely mirrored, or are you about to erase the only copy of a shoot you can never re-create? A new free app called Stow wants to take the guesswork out of that moment.

Built by a videographer rather than a hardware giant, Stow is designed around a single, high-stakes question: is this memory card properly backed up and safe to wipe? Rather than leaving creators to eyeball folder counts or trust their memory after a long day on set, the app tracks whether a card’s contents have been offloaded and secured before you commit to clearing it.

The logic behind Stow taps into a very real frustration in the field. Memory cards — especially the fast, high-capacity models that modern cameras demand — are expensive. That pushes creators to rotate through as few cards as possible, reusing them job after job. But every reuse is a gamble if you’re not certain the previous footage is safely stored elsewhere. Wipe too early and you lose irreplaceable work; hold off too long and you’re buying yet another pricey card to avoid the risk.

Stow aims to close that gap by giving a clear signal on when a card is ready to be reset for the next job. The result is fewer cards sitting idle, more confident formatting, and a workflow that leans on data security instead of nervous guesswork.

What makes the project especially appealing is its origin. This isn’t a polished enterprise utility bolted onto a subscription — it’s a tool made by someone who lives the problem, shooting and managing footage day to day. That perspective tends to show up in the details: an app like this succeeds or fails on how well it mirrors the way creators actually work, from the moment a shoot wraps to the point where a card gets slotted back into the camera bag.

A few practical notes are worth keeping in mind. Any tool that clears you to format a card is only as good as the backups it’s checking against, so Stow is best treated as a confidence layer on top of solid habits — multiple copies, verified transfers, and a consistent offload routine — rather than a replacement for them. Used that way, it becomes a genuine safety net for the most nerve-wracking button in the entire post-production process.

For creators who have ever hovered over the format button wondering whether their footage is truly safe, Stow offers something rare: a free, purpose-built answer from someone who has stood in exactly the same spot.
