Turn Your Phone Into an E-Reader. Smart tweaks for painless reading

Modern phone screens are brighter, sharper and bigger than ever, yet they still aren’t built for a two-hour reading session. If a wall of text on your handset has you reaching for a Kindle or a paperback, the good news is that a handful of settings can push your phone much closer to a proper e-reader — no new hardware required.

Start with the display settings. Both iOS and Android give you more control over font size, weight and color than most people ever touch. On Pixel phones, open Display size and text to scale up the default font, make text bolder, and switch on a Dark theme that many find easier on the eyes. On iOS, head to Display & Brightness, where you’ll find a Text Size slider, a Bold Text toggle and a theme selector — pick Dark to dim the whole interface.

Don’t overlook the warm-color night modes either. They cut blue light and give the screen a cozier tone for evening reading. On Pixel devices it lives under Display and touch > Night Light; on iPhone it’s Display & Brightness > Night Shift. Both can run manually or on a schedule.

Lean on your browser’s reading mode. A lot of your reading happens inside a web browser, and most modern ones strip out clutter with a dedicated reader view.

  • Chrome (Android): tap the three dots, choose Show Reading mode, then swipe up the bottom panel to tweak fonts and colors. The reading-mode icon beside the address bar toggles you back.
  • Safari (iOS): look for the small rectangle-over-two-lines icon to the left of the address bar, tap it and choose Show Reader. Tap again to adjust settings or return to the normal page.
  • Firefox (Android/iOS): hit the Reader View icon — a printed-page symbol — in the address bar. If you see a lightning bolt instead, tap and hold it to switch over.

Or go all-in with a read-it-later app. A dedicated reading app behaves like a supercharged browser reader mode, and the gold standard here is Instapaper (Android and iOS). Share an article from your browser to Instapaper, or add links straight from the app via the menu button and the plus icon. It syncs across devices and even works on the web, so you can queue up articles on your desktop and read them on your phone later.

Open any saved piece and you get a clean, distraction-free layout. The Aa icon in the top-right corner controls page color, font size, font style and pagination. Instapaper is free to use, but a $3 per month premium tier adds advanced article search, unlimited notes and text-to-speech that reads your saved stories aloud.

None of this will fully replace e-ink or a printed page. But with a few taps, your phone becomes a far more comfortable place to actually read.
