7Artisans and SG-image. Two Chinese lens teasers hint at fresh glass
SHARE

The affordable-lens scene out of China rarely sits still, and right now two makers are dangling teasers that point in very different directions. 7Artisans and SG-image are both hinting at new optics, but they’re clearly chasing different shooters.

Start with 7Artisans. The teaser points to what looks like an ultra-wide full-frame prime — the kind of glass that appeals to landscape photographers, architecture buffs and anyone who likes to exaggerate perspective from up close. Ultra-wide primes on full-frame are a demanding category: edge-to-edge sharpness, distortion control and flare resistance all get tested hard. If 7Artisans can land those while keeping the price friendly, as the brand tends to do, it could be an easy recommendation for mirrorless owners who don’t want to spend big on a first-party wide.

SG-image, meanwhile, is heading the other way. Its upcoming lens is a fast standard prime for APS-C cameras — the everyday focal length that doubles as a portrait and street workhorse on a crop sensor. A bright maximum aperture on APS-C means shallow depth of field, better low-light latitude and that subject-isolating look that keeps standard primes so popular. For crop-sensor shooters, a fast, budget-conscious normal lens is often the single most useful upgrade after the kit zoom.

What’s notable is how neatly the two teasers cover opposite ends of a photographer’s kit. One is about grand, sweeping scenes on a big sensor; the other is about intimate, everyday framing on a smaller one. Both play to the strength that has made these Chinese brands a force in recent years: delivering interesting focal lengths and apertures without the premium tag that legacy manufacturers attach.

For now, that’s the shape of it. Neither company has confirmed the finer points — exact focal lengths, apertures, mount options, pricing or availability all remain under wraps. Teasers exist to build anticipation, and these two are doing exactly that, so the specifics will have to wait for the full reveals.

Still, the direction is telling. Ultra-wide full-frame and fast APS-C standard glass are two of the categories where enthusiast demand consistently outpaces the affordable supply. If 7Artisans and SG-image can hit their respective niches with the kind of value pricing that built their reputations, both lenses could find eager buyers well before the marketing settles down.
