Leica M for (RED) Prototype. A Jony Ive Lens Heads to Auction

Some lenses are made to shoot pictures. This one was made to make history. A one-of-a-kind Leica APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH. prototype — the so-called “Leica M for (RED)” lens designed by Jony Ive and Marc Newson back in 2012 — is going under the hammer at Wetzlar Camera Auctions on October 10th, 2026.

If those two names ring a bell, they should. Ive built his reputation shaping the look of Apple, while Newson is arguably the most decorated industrial designer of his generation. The pair spent this period churning out a whole line of cameras and lenses for Leica and (RED), the charity co-founded by Bono to fight AIDS and other diseases in Africa.

The crown jewel of that collaboration was the fully custom Leica M camera that sold for a staggering $1.8 million at a 2013 charity auction. That body shipped with the finished version of Ive and Newson’s 50mm f/2 prime — but the prototype now up for sale looks noticeably different from the final production optic. It’s an early sketch made metal.

What makes this piece so unusual is its complete lack of pedigree markings. Leica built exactly one, without a serial number, using a special alloy. There is genuinely nothing else like it anywhere on the planet — no twin, no sibling, no small run to fall back on. For collectors, that kind of provenance is catnip.

The auction house has set an estimate of €200,000 to €250,000, which places it firmly in trophy-lens territory. Whether it lands inside that band or blows past it is anyone’s guess; single-example Leica prototypes have a habit of surprising the room.

Reflecting on the original charity sale, Dr. Andreas Kaufmann, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Leica Camera AG, called Ive and Newson “two exceptionally talented designers,” adding that their work and “the legend of the Leica brand came together in this unique camera and played a significant role in the achievement of this record sum for the battle against disease in Africa.”

It’s worth being clear about what this is and isn’t. This is not a gadget you can add to your cart. It’s a collector’s artifact — a physical footnote in the story of two of the most influential designers of the modern era, wrapped around Leica’s legendary 50mm optical formula.

For anyone who obsesses over the intersection of design, photography and pop-culture provenance, October 10th is the date to watch. A prototype this rare, with names this famous attached, isn’t just a lens. It’s a conversation piece with a serial number of exactly zero.
