Dust off that CRT if you still have one, because Netflix has done something gloriously counterintuitive: it has taken the crisp, widescreen first season of Stranger Things and beaten it back down to the fuzzy, tape-worn glory of a 1980s VHS rental.

The move marks the show’s 10th anniversary, and honestly it’s the most on-brand thing the streaming giant could have done. The series lives and breathes ’80s nostalgia — Ghostbusters costumes, walkie-talkies, Dungeons & Dragons — so serving it up as if you’d just yanked it off a shelf at Family Video makes perfect sense.

The Duffer Brothers put it plainly: “If Stranger Things existed in Hawkins, sitting on a shelf at Family Video, it would look just like this — complete with pan-and-scan. And hey, if enough of you nerds watch it, maybe we’ll do the rest of the seasons.”

That pan-and-scan bit is the real technical treat here. Modern shows are shot widescreen, but CRT sets of the era ran a boxy 4:3 aspect ratio. To fit a movie onto those tellies, studios cropped the left and right edges of the frame and slid a virtual window across the picture, panning to follow the action whenever something important drifted toward the edges. It’s crude, it loses information, and it was absolutely how a whole generation watched films at home.

Expect the full retro package:

  • 4:3 framing with black bars flanking your widescreen TV
  • Pan-and-scan cropping that trims the sides of the original image
  • A softer, blurrier picture that mimics analogue tape degradation

There’s a delicious irony baked in here. The sharper and more capable your modern OLED or Mini LED panel, the more brutally it will expose every bit of that deliberate softness and murk. This is a case where a pristine 4K display works against the intended effect — the better your screen, the more it screams “this is fake VHS.” Younger viewers, meanwhile, get a firsthand lesson in the compromises we all quietly endured before streaming smoothed everything out.

It’s a neat reminder that image quality isn’t just about resolution — aspect ratio, framing and grain are all part of the story a picture tells. Stripping those modern conveniences away turns a familiar show into something that feels genuinely period-correct rather than merely set in the past.

Whether the rest of the seasons get the same treatment appears to hinge entirely on how many people tune in. The Duffers weren’t exactly subtle about that.

To watch, head to the series landing page on Netflix or simply search for “Stranger Things VHS”.
