Xtra Muse 2 Pro. A promising camera caught in an FCC storm

Xtra is trying to calm nervous customers. In a fresh statement, the company said it remains in talks with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission over proposed fines and potential bans, while promising that existing products will keep receiving full support. The reassurance lands at an awkward moment, because the regulatory heat is very much still on.

Here’s the situation. On July 10, 2026, the FCC proposed a $25,000 fine against Xtra Technology LLC. Worse for the brand’s long-term prospects, the commission is proposing a retroactive ban targeting suspected DJI-linked drones and cameras sold under the Xtra name. That ban isn’t in force yet — a 30-day public comment period gives it a stay of execution — but the message to buyers and retailers is unmistakable.

The fallout has already reached Xtra’s most anticipated product. The company stopped taking preorders for its flagship Muse 2 Pro after the crackdown, and its Early Bird program was paused. In Xtra’s own words, it is “unable to confirm a reliable launch timeline at this stage” (as of July 24, 2026). For anyone who put money down expecting a smooth rollout, that’s a frustrating limbo.

It’s a shame, because on paper the Muse 2 Pro is genuinely tempting. This is a camera that punches well above its price bracket:

  • Dual-camera system designed to handle both wide shots and close-ups
  • Up to 17 stops of dynamic range
  • 10-bit X-Log 3 color profile for serious color grading
  • 4K recording at up to 240 frames per second
  • 103 GB of internal storage
  • Priced at $699 or less

Those numbers explain the enthusiasm. Seventeen stops of dynamic range and 10-bit log capture are the kind of specs creators usually chase in far pricier bodies, and 4K/240fps opens the door to slow-motion work that most compact cameras at this price simply can’t touch. The dual-lens setup also nods toward a versatile, all-in-one shooter rather than a single-focal-length gadget.

The problem is that specs mean little if the hardware can’t legally reach American buyers. The FCC’s concern centers on suspected DJI ties, and the proposed retroactive ban is the real threat here — not the fine. A $25,000 penalty is survivable; being pulled from the market is not. That tension is exactly why Xtra is leaning so hard on the “we’ll keep supporting existing products” line: it’s trying to protect the trust of customers who already own its gear while its future in the U.S. hangs on a comment period and a negotiation.

For now, the Muse 2 Pro sits in a strange purgatory — a capable, aggressively priced camera with no confirmed launch date and a regulatory cloud overhead. Anyone eyeing one should watch how the FCC process unfolds before getting their hopes up.
