Juggling separate PL adapters for every camera body you might touch on set is one of those quietly expensive annoyances of modern cinema work. Simmod’s new 4-in-1 PL Lens Adapter, announced today at US$189, aims to collapse that clutter into a single piece of aluminum.
The concept is elegantly simple: an Arri PL mount on the lens side, and an interchangeable rear module on the camera side. Swap the module and the adapter reconfigures itself for a different mirrorless system. The kit ships with four of them, covering the four full-frame platforms most productions actually use:
- Sony E
- Canon RF
- Nikon Z
- L-Mount
Changing mounts is a mechanical affair rather than a magic trick. You loosen a set of screws with the bundled hex wrench, drop in the correct module, and lock it back down — a few minutes of work rather than a trip to the rental counter for another dedicated adapter.
Purely mechanical, by design
There are no electronic contacts anywhere on this thing, and that is entirely the point. Aperture and focus stay fully manual, exactly as cinematographers expect from a PL setup. The upside is broad compatibility: because nothing needs to talk between lens and body, the adapter works with virtually any Arri PL cinema lens, no firmware handshakes required.
The body is precision CNC-machined from aluminum, and Simmod says it maintains accurate flange focal distance across every module — the detail that actually matters, since a millimetre of error here turns your carefully calibrated lenses into unreliable guesswork. A positive-lock PL interface and a knurled locking ring keep glass planted firmly while making swaps quick and confident during a shoot.
Aimed squarely at mixed-camera sets
The pitch makes sense for a specific and growing crowd: owner-operators and rental houses who bounce between Sony, Canon, Nikon and L-Mount bodies depending on the job. Instead of buying, tracking and hauling four separate PL adapters, you carry one and reconfigure it as needed. Less gear in the case, less capital tied up, fewer things to lose in a Pelican somewhere.
Simmod isn’t alone in this idea — 7Artisans put out a comparable multi-mount PL adapter a few months back, and Simmod’s version lands just US$10 above it. That’s a thin margin, so the real differentiators will come down to machining tolerances and how solid those swappable modules feel after a hundred changes.
Pricing and availability
The Simmod 4-in-1 PL Lens Adapter is available now for US$189. The box includes the adapter body, all four interchangeable modules (Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon Z, L-Mount), a front port cap, mounting screws and a hex screwdriver for swapping mounts. Simmod backs it with a limited lifetime warranty.
