For nearly three years, players have explored Faerûn from a floating isometric perch, zooming out to survey battlefields and clicking their way through the Forgotten Realms. A new modification flips that formula on its head — quite literally dropping you behind your character’s shoulder.
Modder Relysia has released the True Third-Person Camera mod for Baldur’s Gate 3, and it’s a far more ambitious take than the wobbly, half-baked third-person attempts that have circulated before. This one anchors the camera closely to your character for a genuine over-the-shoulder experience, the kind you’d expect from an action RPG rather than a tactical CRPG.
What sells the illusion is the attention to motion. The mod introduces a dynamic field of view that widens as your character breaks into a run, injecting a real sense of speed into your dash across the docks of Baldur’s Gate. Crouching, meanwhile, is handled with smooth transitions rather than the jarring snap you might expect from a community hack.
Crucially, it’s not a one-size-fits-all setup. The mod ships with full Mod Configuration Menu (MCM) support, so you can tweak the camera distance, framing and behaviour to taste — whether you want it hugging tight for stealthy dungeon crawls or pulled back a touch for combat readability.
Speaking of combat, this is where a third-person view fundamentally reshapes the game. Baldur’s Gate 3 was built around turn-based, top-down tactics, and an over-the-shoulder camera changes how you read the environment, spot enemies and position your party. It won’t be to everyone’s taste for hardcore encounters, but for exploration and roleplay it transforms the experience into something closer to a modern single-player adventure.
Getting it running does take a little setup. The mod depends on the Baldur’s Gate 3 Script Extender (BG3SE) and the Mod Configuration Menu (MCM), both staples of the game’s modding ecosystem. If you’ve already got those installed, you’re most of the way there.
A couple of caveats worth flagging. The mod is PC-only, so console players sadly can’t join the over-the-shoulder party. And it’s a free download, available now on Nexus Mods, released this week by Relysia.
It’s a neat reminder of just how alive the Baldur’s Gate 3 modding scene remains, long after launch. Larian’s game already offers dozens of hours of content, but a camera overhaul like this gives even veteran adventurers a reason to roll a fresh character and see Faerûn from an entirely new angle.
