Claude Opus 5. Five ways retirees can put Anthropic's smartest model to work

Anthropic’s flagship AI has a reputation as a coding and enterprise workhorse, but there’s no rule that says you need a job title to benefit from it. Launched on July 24, 2026 and now available across every platform, Claude Opus 5 is arguably at its most useful when you point it at everyday life — and retirees, with time on their hands and plenty of admin to wrangle, are a perfect audience.

Here are five prompt ideas worth trying first.

  • Untangle your finances. Paste in a year of statements or a rough breakdown of income and outgoings, and ask Opus 5 to summarise where the money goes, flag recurring subscriptions you may have forgotten, and suggest a simple monthly budget. It won’t replace a financial adviser, but it’s a tidy first pass.
  • Preserve your memories. Feed it your recollections in whatever messy order they arrive, and ask it to shape them into a readable family history or a letter for grandchildren. Its 1M-token context window means you can dump an enormous amount of text in one go without the model losing the thread — ideal for stitching together decades of stories.
  • Plan a trip properly. Give it your destination, dates, budget and mobility needs, and let it build a day-by-day itinerary with pacing that suits you rather than a 20-something backpacker. Ask it to flag rest days and accessible options explicitly.
  • Learn something new. Whether it’s watercolour technique, a musical instrument or the basics of a new language, ask Opus 5 to act as a patient tutor and build a beginner’s curriculum. The low/medium/high effort toggle lets you dial up how thorough its explanations are.
  • Decode the fine print. Insurance policies, tenancy agreements, medical letters — paste them in and ask for a plain-English summary of what actually matters. With up to 128K max output, it can handle lengthy documents without cutting corners.

A word on the practicalities. Opus 5 is priced at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens via the API, though most casual users will interact with it through Anthropic’s apps rather than counting tokens themselves. The point isn’t the pricing sheet — it’s that a model this capable no longer belongs solely to developers and analysts.

The best way to start is to treat Opus 5 like a well-read assistant who never gets impatient. Ask follow-up questions, correct it when it’s wrong, and refine your prompt until the answer fits. Retirement is a fine time to have a tireless helper on call — and this one happens to be one of the sharpest around.
