iPhone Mirroring. macOS 27 finally lets your phone breathe on the desktop

If you’re one of those people who keeps their iPhone face-down on the desk while working from a Mac, iPhone Mirroring has probably become muscle memory. With macOS 27 — codenamed Golden Gate and unveiled at WWDC 2026 on June 8 — Apple is giving the feature three genuinely useful upgrades, now available to test in the public betas alongside iOS 27.

The headline change is flexible window resizing. Until now, the mirrored iPhone lived in a fixed, phone-shaped rectangle that you couldn’t stretch or shrink. That rigidity is gone. You can finally resize the window to fit your workflow, which sounds like a small thing until you’ve spent a year squinting at a tiny fixed panel wedged into the corner of a 27-inch display.

Second on the list is direct Control Center access. Reaching into your iPhone’s Control Center from the Mac was previously fiddly, but macOS 27 makes those toggles and shortcuts available straight from the mirrored session. Toggling a setting or firing off a quick action no longer means fumbling for the physical phone you were trying to avoid touching in the first place.

The third upgrade is arguably the most overdue: DRM video support. Streaming apps with protected content used to display a black rectangle when mirrored, thanks to copy-protection rules that treated the mirrored feed with suspicion. macOS 27 addresses that, so DRM-locked video should actually play through the mirrored window rather than staring back at you as an empty void.

Taken together, these changes reframe iPhone Mirroring from a convenient-but-limited party trick into something closer to a proper second screen for your phone. Resizable windows make it usable, Control Center access makes it faster, and DRM playback removes one of the more baffling limitations of the original implementation.

A few practical notes for anyone tempted to jump in early. These features are currently in the public betas of iOS 27 and macOS 27, which means they’re still being polished and shouldn’t go anywhere near a primary device you rely on. Golden Gate is scheduled for a full release later in 2026, so if you’d rather not live on the bleeding edge, the stable versions aren’t far off.

None of these additions reinvent the concept — iPhone Mirroring still fundamentally streams your handset to your desktop over Continuity — but they chip away at exactly the friction points that made the first version feel like a preview. Being able to size the window, poke at Control Center, and actually watch protected video covers three of the most common complaints in one update.

It’s a quietly pragmatic release, and for anyone who leans on the feature daily, the upgrades land where it counts.
