Pergear 50mm f/1.4. Fast glass that costs less than a decent dinner

Fast fifties usually cost a small fortune. Sony’s FE 50mm f/1.4 GM runs US$1,298, Canon’s RF 50mm f/1.4 L VCM asks US$1,499, and even Nikon’s comparatively humble Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.4 will set you back US$546.95. Pergear just crashed that party with a 50mm f/1.4 prime that sells for US$129. Yes, really.

The trade-off is right there in the name: this is a manual focus lens, full stop. No autofocus motors, no electronic focus-by-wire trickery. For anyone shooting portraits, still life, or just enjoying the deliberate rhythm of turning a focus ring, that’s a compromise many will happily make — especially at this price.

Dropping the AF hardware pays dividends beyond the sticker. The all-metal barrel weighs just 255 grams and measures a mere 43.5 millimeters long, making it dramatically more pocketable than the big-name alternatives. For context, Nikon’s own budget Z 50mm f/1.4 is 167 grams heavier and roughly 45 millimeters longer. Canon’s L-series version stretches to 99.1 millimeters and 580 grams. Pergear’s little prime is closer in size to a pancake than a portrait cannon.

The optics keep things deliberately simple: six elements in six groups, sitting behind a 12-blade aperture designed to render round, creamy bokeh at wide apertures. The focusing range runs from 0.6 meters to infinity, the angle of view is a classic 46°, and there’s an AR coating to keep flare in check. Up front you get a common 52mm filter thread, so accessories won’t cost you a second mortgage either.

Pergear is candid about what this lens is and isn’t. Marketing leans into a warm, “film-like” color palette and touts pleasant sunstars and circular bokeh — while gently acknowledging that razor-sharp, corner-to-corner clinical perfection isn’t the goal here. Optical “character” is the polite term for the imperfections that come with a lens this cheap, and honestly, that’s part of the charm for a lot of shooters.

Let’s be clear about positioning: nobody cross-shopping a US$1,499 Canon L lens is going to swap it for this. That’s not the point. What Pergear offers is a genuinely low-risk way to get fast f/1.4 glass onto your camera without gutting your budget or ballooning your kit bag. It’s the kind of lens you toss in a bag and forget about until you need shallow depth of field in a pinch.

The Pergear 50mm f/1.4 was announced on August 2, 2026, and is available now for Sony E, Nikon Z, L-Mount, and Canon RF full-frame mirrorless cameras. At US$129 — with the occasional 10% discount floating around — it’s about as easy an impulse buy as fast glass gets.
