Sony’s cheapest noise-cancelling wireless headphones may finally be getting a successor. Import filings spotted by thewalkman.blog point to a new model called the Sony WH-CH730N, lined up to replace the well-loved WH-CH720N that launched back in March 2023.
The paperwork is short on hardware details but generous on colours. The WH-CH730N is listed in Black, White, Pink, Blue and Beige — essentially the same palette as its predecessor, with Beige as the sole new addition. That is about all the filing gives away: nothing yet on drivers, chipset or battery life.
Timing is the more interesting clue. The FCC confidentiality end date is October 20th, which typically lines up with a product going public. Given the WH-CH720N arrived in early 2023 and we are now well past that point, a fourth-quarter launch for the WH-CH730N looks plausible.
Why does a budget pair of headphones warrant this much attention? Because the outgoing WH-CH720N punched considerably above its weight. What Hi-Fi? crowned them Award-winners and described them as “dependably made, enthusiastic-sounding headphones” that “deliver good ANC and a strong feature set to the very affordable end of the wireless headphone market.” For sheer sound-per-pound value, they remain hard to beat.
They weren’t flawless, though, and that leaves an obvious wish list for the sequel:
- A slightly lighter hand on the bass
- A fully folding design for better portability
- On-head wear detection, so playback pauses when you take them off
- Support for Sony’s higher-quality LDAC codec
Any of these would sharpen the appeal without upsetting the formula. The bigger question is price. The WH-CH720N launched at £99 / $129, and that aggressive positioning is precisely why they earned their reputation. A sequel that creeps too far north of those figures would risk losing the value crown that made the line so appealing in the first place. Hold the line on cost, add a couple of the missing conveniences, and Sony could have another budget favourite on its hands.
For now, none of this is official. Sony has confirmed neither the model nor a launch date, and the specifications remain unknown. But import filings rarely appear for products that never ship, and the WH-CH730N has some very large shoes to fill. We’ll be listening out for more.
