Memoirium. A PS1-flavored Soulslike that dreams you into the Backrooms

Somewhere between the collapsing dreamscapes of Inception, the punishing rhythm of Dark Souls, and the queasy dread of the Backrooms, a solo developer has been quietly building one of the year’s strangest action RPGs. Memoirium, made by GoldenGratus and co-published with Innersloth’s indie fund Outersloth, arrives on Windows PC via Steam on August 13, 2026, priced at US$14.99.

The pitch is deceptively simple: you play as the Dreamer, wandering a realm stitched together from disconnected memories. That framing is what lets the game get away with its wild tonal swings. One moment you’re picking through a fog-choked graveyard, the next you’re inside a rustic castle, and then — jarringly — a 21st-century classroom. Because everything unfolds inside a dream, no location has to obey a single aesthetic. Sci-fi, medieval fantasy, and unsettlingly ordinary modern spaces all coexist without apology.

The pixelated, PS1-era art style is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Rather than reading as a nostalgia gimmick, the low-fidelity graphics make each environment feel deliberately off — unfinished, liminal, wrong in a way that will land squarely with anyone who’s spent too long staring at Backrooms footage at 3 a.m. If you remember FromSoftware’s 1998 horror oddity Echo Night, that lineage feels present too.

Under the eerie surface, the combat is thoroughly Soulslike. Expect to:

  • Manage stamina and time your attacks
  • Alternate light and heavy swings
  • Read enemies to block or dodge at the right moment

There are eight dungeons to explore across a fully interconnected world with multiple routes, populated by monsters, mini-bosses, and bosses. You’ll collect armors, masks, weapons, spells, and consumables. Interestingly, armor, masks, and items don’t just tweak your stats — they can affect enemy behavior. Consumables replenish at certain points and can be upgraded as you collect more, while Lullabies stand in for the genre’s usual magic.

The most distinctive wrinkle is “Your Room,” a personal safe haven set apart from the surrounding chaos. As you scavenge the dream, you gather mementos to decorate it — a desktop computer, a bed, a desk — turning it into a customizable retreat where you can also write. Steam sums up the loop neatly: Dream, Defy, Decorate. It’s a rare cozy counterweight to a genre that usually offers little more than a bonfire and a moment to breathe.

GoldenGratus released a demo on June 6, 2026, with progress carrying over to the full release — a smart move for a game that lives or dies on atmosphere. And with Outersloth’s track record behind titles like Flock Around and Dosa Divas, there’s a real case that Memoirium could quietly become one of the year’s sleeper hits.
