Topping D900. A premium DAC that reinvents digital-to-analog conversion
SHARE

Topping has never been shy about chasing engineering firsts, and the D900 feels like the company flexing its full technical muscle. This is a Digital Audio Convertor built around proprietary silicon rather than an off-the-shelf DAC chip — and it aims to deliver a sound that reviewers are describing as unusually fluid and organic for something with this much circuitry inside.

At the heart of the D900 sits a proprietary 32-element PSRM module paired with Topping’s own I/V conversion technology. In plain terms, rather than leaning on a mass-produced converter, Topping engineered the analog-domain heavy lifting in-house. That approach is what gives the D900 its claim to a smoother, less clinical presentation — the sort of sonic character audiophiles usually associate with far more esoteric (and far pricier) gear.

Crucially, the D900 is more than a DAC. It doubles as a preamp, with a dedicated preamp circuit and 0.5dB-step volume control for precise level matching. That fine granularity matters when you’re feeding active speakers or a power amp directly and want to dial in the volume without the coarse jumps you get on lesser units.

Connectivity is where the D900 stretches beyond the purist crowd. It’s a multi-input device, so it slots into a wired hi-fi rack easily, but it also throws in Bluetooth via an LDAC circuit — meaning you can stream high-bitrate wireless audio without ditching the fidelity story entirely. It’s a rare acknowledgment that even high-end listeners occasionally want to cue up a track from their phone.

Topping also hands over some tuning control with a selectable 10-band EQ. For a company that often leans toward transparent, measurement-driven neutrality, building in flexible equalization is a pragmatic touch — you can shape the response to your room, your headphones, or simply your taste, all in the digital domain.

Put together, the feature list reads like Topping trying to cover every base at once:

  • Proprietary 32-element PSRM module and I/V conversion technology
  • Multi-input DAC with integrated preamp
  • Dedicated preamp circuit with 0.5dB-step volume control
  • Selectable 10-band EQ
  • Bluetooth wireless via LDAC

The D900 is available now, priced at US$1,799.00 (£1,799.00). That places it firmly in premium territory — well above Topping’s budget-hero reputation — but the pitch is clear: this is the brand going after serious two-channel and headphone systems with hardware it designed from the silicon up.

Whether the in-house conversion approach genuinely translates into that promised fluid, effortless sound is something each listener will judge for themselves. But on paper, the D900 is one of the more ambitious statements Topping has made, and it lands as a genuine alternative to the established names at this price point.
