Android vs iOS vs HarmonyOS. Where the mobile OS race stands in Q2 2026
SHARE

The smartphone platform wars rarely produce dramatic upsets, but the latest numbers from Counterpoint Research (CR) do show the ground shifting — just slowly. Based on Q2 (April to June) smartphone shipment data, the firm has laid out how the three major mobile operating systems are performing worldwide.

One important caveat before the figures: these percentages reflect handsets shipped during that specific quarter, not the total installed base of devices actually in use. In other words, this is a snapshot of what left the factories and hit shelves between April and June — a leading indicator of momentum rather than a census of what’s in people’s pockets.

With that framing in place, here’s how the podium looks:

  • Android remains firmly in charge with a 75% share, up from 73% in Q1.
  • iOS sits in second at 20%, slipping from 22% in Q1.
  • HarmonyOS, Huawei’s homegrown platform, holds third with 5% — exactly where it landed in Q1.

The story here is less about a shakeup and more about the natural rhythm of the industry. Apple’s dip is unsurprising: iPhone sales tend to swell around new hardware launches in the back half of the year and cool off in spring, which typically inflates Android’s relative slice during Q2. A two-point swing in either direction is well within the seasonal noise Apple experiences every year.

Android’s 75% is a reminder of just how sprawling its ecosystem is. That single figure encompasses a vast range of manufacturers — from flagship-tier Samsung and Google devices down to budget handsets in emerging markets — all riding on Google’s platform. It’s a dominance built on breadth rather than any single hero product.

The most quietly interesting entry is HarmonyOS. Holding a steady 5% globally is no small feat for a platform that was effectively forced into existence by circumstance, and one that operates largely outside Google’s orbit. Huawei’s software has become a genuine third pillar of the mobile world, even if its footprint remains concentrated and its global growth has, at least this quarter, plateaued rather than surged.

What these figures don’t capture is nuance by region — HarmonyOS carries far more weight in its home market than a flat 5% worldwide suggests, and Android’s share varies wildly between developed and developing economies. Shipment data also tends to lag real-world usage patterns, so the balance of active devices looks somewhat different again.

For now, the takeaway is straightforward: the mobile OS landscape remains a two-horse race with a persistent, credible third contender. Android sets the pace, iOS follows its familiar seasonal pattern, and HarmonyOS keeps proving it isn’t going anywhere.
