Robotiq TSF-85. The fingertips that give robots a sense of touch

Robots are getting smarter by the day, but ask one to pick up an egg without crushing it or fish a coin out of a cluttered bin, and the illusion of intelligence quickly falls apart. The bottleneck isn’t the brain — it’s the hands. And that’s exactly where the Robotiq TSF-85 Tactile Sensor Fingertips aim to make a difference.

Launched on January 27, 2026, and available now, the TSF-85 is a deceptively simple upgrade: a pair of tactile fingertips that snap onto Robotiq’s existing 2F-85 Adaptive Gripper. No new arm, no new gripper body — just replace the standard fingertips and suddenly your robot can feel what it’s holding.

The magic lives in the numbers. Each fingertip carries 28 taxels — individual pressure-sensing points that map the contact patch between the gripper and whatever it’s grasping. That’s the difference between blindly clamping down and knowing precisely how much force an object can take before it slips or shatters.

But pressure is only part of the story. The TSF-85 also delivers:

  • Vibration sensing at 1000 Hz — fast enough to detect the tiny micro-slips that happen a fraction of a second before an object actually falls, giving the robot a chance to tighten its grip in real time.
  • IMU-based proprioception — an inertial measurement unit that lets the fingertip understand its own orientation and motion, feeding richer context back to the control system.

Together, these three sensing modes turn a blunt mechanical pincer into something closer to a human fingertip: aware of texture, force, movement and its own position in space. For physical AI — the branch of robotics obsessed with getting machines to act competently in the messy real world — that combination is the missing ingredient. Vision models can tell a robot what an object is; touch tells it how to handle it.

Robustness clearly wasn’t an afterthought either. Robotiq says the fingertips have been tested to over 2 million cycles, which matters enormously in a factory or lab setting where a gripper might open and close thousands of times a shift. A tactile sensor that wears out after a week of production is a science project, not a tool.

Compatibility is the quiet masterstroke here. Because the TSF-85 is designed to replace standard fingertips on the Robotiq 2F-85 and 2F-140 grippers, existing users can bolt sensing onto hardware they already own rather than ripping out their setup. It’s an incremental path to dexterity, not a forklift upgrade.

The broader significance is hard to overstate. As humanoid robots and AI-driven automation dominate the headlines, it’s easy to forget that intelligence is nothing without the ability to manipulate the world. Better grippers — grippers that sense, adapt and respond — are the unglamorous foundation the whole physical-AI dream rests on. The TSF-85 is a small, tactile step toward robots that can finally handle the real world with a bit of finesse.
