Huawei has flipped its usual launch script with the MatePad Air (2026). The tablet was announced for global markets back in July and has been on sale abroad for weeks — yet it only reaches China on September 7, where it will share the stage with the company’s tri-folding Mate XT 2.
The hardware is already well known. The MatePad Air (2026) is a 12” tablet built around a 144Hz OLED panel in a productivity-friendly 3:2 aspect ratio, with a resolution of 2,800 x 1,840px. Huawei’s PaperMatte finish — an anti-reflective treatment that cuts down glare and interference from ambient light — is offered as an optional upgrade that costs extra.

The slim profile is what earns the tablet its “Air” moniker, though there is no IP rating, so official dust or water resistance is off the table. A magnetic accessory connector hooks up the optional keyboard cover, and a stylus is supported too — in some markets it even comes bundled with select versions of the tablet.
The Chinese release may not be a straight copy of the global one. There is talk of raising the screen’s maximum brightness from 1,200 nits to 2,000 nits, and the software will definitely differ: the Chinese model will launch with HarmonyOS 7, while the global version runs v4.3. China also gets four colors — Pink, Dawn Gold, Blue and White — one more than the Airy Blue, White and Sakura Pink trio sold elsewhere.
As for money, the MatePad Air (2026) is already available in several markets at a price in the $800-$900 range. In Europe it launched at €849 for the 8GB + 256GB version with a keyboard, €899 for the PaperMatte edition with a keyboard or an M-Pencil Pro, and €999 for the 12GB model with a keyboard. GSMArena expects Chinese pricing to come in lower than that.
The September 7 event won’t be a one-tablet show either — it is headlined by the Mate XT 2, for which pre-orders are already live in China.
