The guaranteed 24-hour order window that Wizards of the Coast tested with its Hatsune Miku Secret Lair Commander deck is here to stay. In an update published on the Magic: The Gathering blog on September 1, 2026, Secret Lair boss Matthew Hodgins said the experiment went “incredibly well” — and that the company intends to keep running with it. “The 24-hour order window did exactly the job we wanted it to do. If you ordered inside the window, you’re getting a deck. That’s the whole point, and it’s the part I’m happiest about,” Hodgins wrote.
Print-to-demand was Wizards’ answer to a persistent Secret Lair headache: coveted drops such as Goblin Storm and Dandân sold out almost immediately after negative feedback-generating launches, leaving players empty-handed and scalpers well fed. The Hatsune Miku Commander deck, priced at US$149.99, went on sale on August 10, 2026 with a different promise — every single order placed inside the 24-hour window would be fulfilled, no matter how many came in.
The system is not friction-free, and Hodgins didn’t pretend otherwise. Fulfillment happens in two stages: a limited run of pre-printed decks ships right away, and once those are gone, the remaining orders move to backorder. Those backordered Miku decks are not expected to ship until May 2027 in North America and June 2027 in the EU and UK. Wizards also had to throttle the purchase queue for a little more than 20 minutes when traffic spiked during the transition to backorder. The long backorder wait, Hodgins admitted, will “take time to solve, but we agree it should be better, and we’re working on it.” New shipping rates and carriers in North America, plus fixes to email notifications and order tracking, are also on the to-do list.
The next test comes in a matter of weeks with Secret Lair Commander Deck: Odds and Ends, which will use the same structure — a 24-hour limited order window backed by the fulfillment guarantee. Wizards plans to use that drop to gather more data for future 24-hour releases.
There is a bigger tease buried in the update, too: a dedicated storefront for Secret Lair drops, meant to make buying more streamlined and transparent. “It’s still on the table, and this sale made it more likely rather than less,” Hodgins said. For a product line long defined by frantic checkout races, that would be the most welcome change of all.
