Zone 0 Training. Why Coaches Want You Moving at a Crawl

Zone 2 has spent the past few years as the fashionable way to do cardio — keep your heart rate low and hold it there for the length of the effort. Now trainers are pointing a rung lower. Zone 0 is movement so gentle it hardly reads as a workout, and the argument is that this is precisely its value.

The case was set out on September 5, 2026 by Sam Hopes, fitness editor and coach at Tom’s Guide, a Level 3 qualified trainer and Level 2 Reiki practitioner. Her definition is deliberately unglamorous: “moving slowly, focusing on your breathing and feeling connected to your body; in other words, active recovery.”

What counts? Gentle walking, stretching and mobility routines, or gardening. It can also mean micro-movement workouts or “exercise snacking” peppered through the day, or simply getting up and moving around more often. The single test Hopes offers is easy to run in your head mid-session: “Am I exercising at a conversational pace?”

Breathing does more work here than pace does. Hopes’ instruction is to slow the breath down, “breathing down into your stomach while lightly bracing your core. Imagine inflating and deflating a balloon; keep your breathing evenly paced while you move.” That is the whole technique — no interval timer, no lactate meter, no target wattage.

The claimed payoffs fall into four buckets:

  • Accessibility. Movement that beginners and anyone steering clear of high-intensity work can actually start with.
  • Mobility. Lower-intensity movement gives the body room to recover and rebuild, supporting injury prevention and performance.
  • Mindfulness. Reduced stress and cortisol, better anxiety management and improved mood, without sitting down to formally meditate.
  • Physical health. Improvements to blood pressure, glucose control, circulation and cardiovascular fitness.

There is published evidence sitting underneath the trend rather than just vibes. A 2022 review in The Lancet found that taking more steps daily lowers the risk of mortality, and that it does not matter whether you walk fast or slow. The researchers suggest older adults (60+) benefit most from around 6,000–8,000 steps a day, while younger adults see the biggest gains at 8,000–10,000 steps. That is a threshold most people can hit at a stroll.

Is Zone 0 enough on its own? Hopes does not pitch it as a replacement. The recommendation is to keep your existing training regimen and add one or two days of Zone 0 per week — a structure that skews most useful for beginners and for anyone rebuilding after an injury.

For the wearable-obsessed, that is a slightly awkward proposition. A day spent gardening and breathing into your stomach produces no impressive graph and no personal best. Which, as of September 2026, appears to be the point: the trend is a corrective to a fitness culture that has spent a decade insisting every session must be earned in sweat.
