Sigma 20-60mm f/2.8-4 DG Contemporary. A standard zoom that thinks wider

Most full-frame standard zooms open at 24mm, and the cheaper ones at 28mm. Sigma’s 20-60mm f/2.8-4 DG Contemporary, announced on September 7, 2026, opens at 20mm instead — and Sigma is keen to explain what those extra millimeters buy. The angle of view grows from about 84° at 24mm to 94.5° at 20mm, which is the difference between squeezing a room into the frame and shooting it comfortably.

The trade sits at the other end. Against a 24-70mm f/2.8 or a 24-105mm f/4, this 3x zoom gives up reach in exchange for perspective. What it gets back is size. The lens weighs 385 grams (13.6 ounces) in L-Mount and 375 grams in Sony E-mount, making it nearly half as light as the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art — itself no heavyweight. Sigma describes a lens “designed to deliver both a wide-angle perspective and exceptional portability”, packed into what it calls a palm-sized design.

Optically, it is 15 elements in 13 groups, including three aspherical elements and three SLD glass elements meant to hold sharpness across the whole zoom range. Sigma says its most advanced simulation technology went into suppressing flare and ghosting. The rest of the hardware reads like a modern compact zoom:

  • Aperture from f/2.8-4 to f/22-32, with nine rounded blades
  • Angle of view 94.5°-39.6°
  • 67mm filter thread
  • L-Mount and Sony E-mount

The close-focus figures are the other headline. The lens focuses as close as 15.8 centimeters at 28mm and reaches a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.3 at 35mm. That is not quite half-macro territory, but it is close enough to change how the lens gets used — and at 60mm the ratio is still a respectable 1:2.9. For a zoom with no macro badge on the barrel, that is unusually useful.

Autofocus runs on Sigma’s High-response Linear Actuator (HLA), with the company promising fast, accurate focus and “outstanding tracking performance” on fast-moving subjects. Focus breathing is claimed to be minimal, which is the tell that this lens was designed with hybrid shooters in mind rather than stills photographers alone.

The f/2.8 aperture at the 20mm end also puts night-sky work on the table, at least on paper. Whether the corners hold up under stars is the sort of question that only real-world testing answers, and Sigma is not making specific claims there.

Pricing is the part that will decide how this lens lands. The Sigma 20-60mm f/2.8-4 DG Contemporary will be available on October 6 for E-mount and L-Mount cameras, priced at $849 — well under what a 24-70mm f/2.8 costs, for a lens that goes wider and weighs a fraction as much. The people it is aimed at are easy to picture: full-frame owners who want one lens on the body and would rather have 20mm than 70mm.
