Sony Xperia 1 VIII. Android 17 arrives with a desktop mode in tow

Sony’s flagship was announced on May 13, 2026 with Android 16 on board. It is now collecting Android 17 over the air, with owners in Europe the first to see the notification pop up and post about it on Reddit.

The package is not a small one: 1.2GB of download, identifying itself as build 73.1.A.2.61. Coverage of the rollout, which began on September 7, 2026, points to the UK and Germany as the opening markets, with more regions expected to follow.

What actually changes is more interesting than the version number. The headline addition is Desktop mode: hook the phone up to a monitor with a keyboard and mouse, and it turns into a PC stand-in for browsing, email and video. Sony is limiting that one to the Xperia 1 VI, Xperia 1 VII and Xperia 1 VIII — the models with the horsepower and the display pipeline to make it worth doing.

The rest of the changelog covers the things you touch every day:

  • Wallpaper & style — new wallpapers and clock designs, plus control over the shape and style of app icons.
  • Redesigned Quick Settings — tiles can be resized and rearranged, and larger tiles can optionally carry short descriptions.
  • Better screen recording — capture the whole screen or a single app, and record device audio and the microphone at the same time.
  • AI Camera Assistant presets — register up to three custom looks, give them your own names, and switch between them in Photo mode. This one is exclusive to the Xperia 1 VIII.
  • Bug fixes and performance optimisations, as ever.

The wider Android 17 wave covers the Xperia 1 VIII, Xperia 1 VII, Xperia 1 VI, Xperia 10 VIII and Xperia 10 VII, though Sony notes that timing and the exact feature set vary by device and market.

As a reminder of what the software is running on: the Xperia 1 VIII pairs a 6.5-inch FHD+ LTPO AMOLED panel at 120Hz with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, in 256GB/12GB RAM and 1TB/16GB RAM configurations. There is a 5,000 mAh battery behind 30W wired and 15W wireless charging, a triple 48MP camera set (main, ultrawide and a telephoto with 2.9x optical zoom) alongside a 12MP selfie camera, and — still, defiantly — a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microSD slot. Pricing starts at £1,399 in the UK and €1,499 in Europe; the phone is not sold in the United States.

Desktop mode is the sort of feature that quietly changes how a phone gets used. That Sony shipped it to three generations at once, rather than fencing it off to the newest hardware, is the more generous part of the story.
