Audio-Technica ATH-AL5NC. The open-back headphone finally cuts the cord
SHARE

Open-back headphones and Bluetooth have spent years being treated as a contradiction. Open-backs leak sound, let the outside world in and traditionally live tethered to a desk amplifier. Audio-Technica has decided that is a rule worth breaking: the ATH-AL5NC, announced on September 9, 2026, is the company’s first wireless open-back model, and it went on sale the same day at US$279 through Audio-Technica and authorised resellers.

The appeal of an open back is physical rather than marketing-driven. Air moves freely from outside the ear cups past the drivers, which keeps heat from building up over long sessions, and the sound presentation is more spacious than a sealed cup can manage. The trade-off is equally physical: less isolation, and more of your music escaping to everyone nearby. Audio-Technica is not pretending otherwise, and has built the ATH-AL5NC around managing those consequences instead of denying them.

The core specification reads like a serious pair of wireless cans rather than a novelty:

  • 53 mm drivers in an open-back housing
  • LDAC support for 24-bit/96 kHz high-resolution wireless audio, plus AAC and SBC
  • Up to 75 hours of playback with noise reduction off, and up to 50 hours with it enabled
  • A 15-minute charge for up to 8 hours of listening
  • Bluetooth multipoint, staying connected to two devices at once
  • A quoted weight of 240 g

That 75-hour figure is the headline, and it is the sort of number that changes how you treat a pair of headphones. You stop thinking about charging them and start thinking about where you left them.

The NC in the name needs a caveat, and Audio-Technica supplies it. An open-back design physically cannot deliver the sealed-cup silence of conventional noise cancellers. What you get instead is a noise-reduction function, triggered by a button on the right ear cup, alongside a Sound-Leakage Reduction Mode aimed at the other half of the problem — keeping your listening from annoying the person across the table. Think of both as damage limitation rather than a wall of silence, and the design makes sense.

The Audio-Technica Connect app handles EQ and soundstage adjustment, codec selection and a headphone-locating function, and there is a low-latency mode for gaming, where an open-back’s wider presentation has always been an advantage. A built-in microphone covers calls and meetings on Bluetooth, and the bundled 1.2 m cable with a 3.5 mm stereo mini-plug carries its own electret condenser mic for wired use. Noise reduction works over the cable as well. A protective carrying pouch is included.

At US$279, the ATH-AL5NC is not chasing the flagship wireless crowd on features. It is making a narrower argument: that the open-back sound audiophiles have been plugging into desks for decades no longer has to keep you plugged in.
