Some photographs look like a still from a film nobody has made yet. An empty street under pale light, one figure waiting at a crossing, and the sense that something has just happened or is about to. That is the world of Nicolas Rachline, and his first monograph, Elsebound: Photographs from the Quiet Hours, is due from Rizzoli on September 29, 2026.

Rachline was born in France and works from Belgium. He did not start out as a photographer: he spent years in advertising and editing, then turned to photography full time just over ten years ago. Elsebound is the first book devoted entirely to his work, and it gathers images made over roughly a decade.

Cities after dark, and a little off

The book moves through Paris, Los Angeles and New York, along with stops in Brussels and St Tropez. The captions from the preview published by PetaPixel on September 13, 2026 give a sense of the range:

  • Los Angeles, 2015
  • NYC, 2016
  • Paris, 2019
  • St Tropez, 2021 and 2024
  • Brussels 2022

The places are familiar, yet the pictures feel slightly wrong in a way that is hard to put a finger on. Streets are deserted, figures stay anonymous and cut off from one another, and ordinary landscapes seem to drift toward the surreal. Each frame looks frozen mid-scene, heavy with silence and suspense, with the tension of film noir.

Painters as much as photographers

Rachline’s influences show clearly. From photography, he draws on Brassaï’s night streets, Philip-Lorca diCorcia’s staged-yet-candid tableaux and Saul Leiter’s layered, color-soaked city scenes. From painting, the obvious one is Edward Hopper, master of lonely people in lit windows. The other is Paul Delvaux, the Belgian surrealist whose dreamlike squares and railway stations fit the Brussels-based photographer’s eerie calm.

What holds the book together is mood more than place. Taken one by one, the photographs are small enigmas; laid out in sequence, they start to hint at a larger, unwritten story. The themes are loneliness in contemporary life and its fragile beauty: nostalgia for something lost, hope for something different, and the strain of waiting in an uncertain world. The result is melancholic but very human rather than cold.

The book itself

  • Title: Elsebound: Photographs from the Quiet Hours
  • Photographer: Nicolas Rachline
  • Foreword: Graydon Carter and Nathan King
  • Publisher: Rizzoli
  • Format: Hardcover, 224 pages
  • ISBN: 978-0-8478-7729-4
  • Price: $65.00
  • Publication date: September 29, 2026

For anyone who shoots street or night photography, Elsebound is a good study in restraint: few elements, careful light and a lot left unsaid. It is a reminder that a photograph does not have to explain itself to stay with you.
