Spotify Kids and Family Music Toggle. Take your Wrapped back from the nursery

Every parent with a streaming habit knows the damage. You spend years patiently teaching the algorithm that you are a person of refined taste, and then one rainy Saturday of nursery rhymes and cartoon soundtracks quietly rewrites the whole profile. On September 15, 2026 Spotify shipped the obvious fix: a single switch that tells the recommendation engine to ignore kids and family music altogether.

The control is called “Include kids and family music in taste profile”, and it sits in the app under Settings and privacy → Content and display. It ships switched on, so kids’ listening still counts by default; flipping it off is what severs the connection between what the children play and what Spotify thinks you want to hear next.

The genuinely useful part is that it applies retroactively. This is not a line drawn from the moment you tap it — the kids’ music already sitting in your history stops counting too, which means the K-pop marathon that got everyone through the summer holidays can be scrubbed from your profile after the fact. Spotify says it can take up to 48 hours for the change to show up in your personalised recommendations, so don’t expect Discover Weekly to repent overnight.

Three of Spotify’s personalisation showpieces are in scope:

  • Discover Weekly — the weekly algorithmic mixtape
  • Daily Mix — the rotating genre playlists built from your history
  • Wrapped — the annual round-up, where a rogue theme tune landing in your top five songs is a particular kind of humiliation

Importantly, nothing gets locked away. With the setting off you can still search for, play and build playlists of kids and family music exactly as before. The tracks simply stop feeding the profile that drives your own recommendations, which is the distinction that makes this worth having rather than just another parental lock.

The open question is classification. Spotify’s own description of what qualifies is loose: “the songs you play on repeat from your kids’ favourite animated movies, theme songs from family TV shows, nursery rhymes, and more.” Animated-film soundtracks and lullabies are easy calls. But plenty of mainstream pop does double duty as children’s music in practice, and no toggle can tell whether a chart single was playing for the eight-year-old in the back seat or for the driver. Expect a grey zone, and expect people to argue about where the line falls.

The feature is rolling out globally on mobile to both Free and Premium users. It follows Spotify’s earlier options to exclude specific tracks or playlists from your taste profile, and its managed accounts for younger listeners — a steady accumulation of controls for a system that, until recently, treated every play as an equally sincere statement of who you are.
