Most Fire Emblem games let you build friendships over tea, meals or training. Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave does it with birdseed. Nintendo’s strategy RPG launched on Nintendo Switch 2 on September 17, 2026, and one of its oddest systems, Bird Time, has quickly become one of the most talked-about. It is also one of the most important if you want strong bonds with your allies.
What Bird Time actually is
For much of the story, the protagonist Eshmel, the Herald of the Pale Raven, takes the form of a bird. You can visit the Perch and pick the Feed Pale Raven activity. A companion of your choice then feeds Eshmel and starts talking about their life. The camera switches to the bird’s point of view, and the mini-game begins.
Game8 compares the setup to Tea Time from Fire Emblem: Three Houses, with one big difference: Eshmel can’t talk. Every reply is a bird action. Each time, you choose from three options:
- gazing intently at the speaker
- flapping your wings
- singing
Pick the reaction the companion was hoping for and your support with them goes up. Pick the wrong one and you get a different, less useful response.
When it unlocks and why it matters
According to Game8’s walkthrough, Bird Time unlocks after you recruit Guzran in Chapter 3. From then on, it’s one of the best uses of Free Time. The guide says Bird Time “greatly increases the support you’ll eventually have with Eshmel”, so skipping it slows your relationship building a lot.
Why the right answer isn’t obvious
The difficulty comes from how little you can say. In its review, Pocket Tactics gave the game a 9/10 and called the mechanic “outright ridiculous”. Reviewer Connor Christie described a heartfelt talk with Dietrich where your only replies are staring, flapping or singing. He added that there’s “quite often no obvious response”. Players do start to spot patterns through trial and error as the game goes on. That guesswork is why sites like Polygon have published answer guides for each conversation.
Tips for getting it right
- Listen to the companion’s mood. A quiet, reflective moment and a boastful story usually call for different reactions.
- Keep track of which reactions each character liked before. Many players notice patterns over time.
- Spend Free Time on Bird Time regularly, since the support gains add up across the campaign.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive published by Nintendo and priced at US$69.99 for the digital version in the US eShop. You travel through time to recruit allies and fight the demon god Balor across four connected hero stories. Combat is turn-based on grid maps, with Blaze Arts (signature moves) and Blessings (divine boons). Outside battle, you explore dungeons with turn-based Clash battles, manage the city of Dagsion and take part in the Heroic Games tournament. The download is 27.5 GB, and the game is rated T for Teen by the ESRB.
Bird Time may be ridiculous, but it isn’t optional if you want to max out your bonds. Keep an answer guide close, or be ready to learn the hard way what each companion wants from a bird.
