Leica’s SL3 series finally has a baseplate worthy of its build quality. Helium Design Lab’s HeSL3 Interface Plate was announced in May 2026 and arrives as a precision-machined foundation for the entire SL3 family — the SL3, SL3-S, and the freshly unveiled SL3-P.
This isn’t a cheap stamped accessory. The HeSL3 is fully CNC-machined from 6061-T6 aluminum and finished in black anodization, the kind of material spec you’d expect from people who take rig-building seriously. The result is a plate that hugs the camera body and adds a genuine ecosystem of mounting options rather than a single token tripod thread.
The headline feature for most shooters will be the integrated Arca-Swiss mount compatibility, letting you drop the camera straight onto a compatible tripod head or clamp without a separate quick-release plate. Helium has also baked in support for Peak Design’s Capture Clip and Travel Tripod, so the SL3 can clip onto a backpack strap or slot into Peak Design’s travel ecosystem with no adapters.
From there it gets clever. The plate hides an AirTag slot — a quietly brilliant touch for anyone who’s ever worried about a Leica disappearing in transit — alongside an extra 1/4-20 screw mount for adding accessories like cages, handles or magic arms. There are dedicated anchor lugs for camera straps and additional connection points that Helium says are designed to accommodate future accessories, suggesting this is the first piece of a wider system rather than a one-off.
It’s the sort of accessory that exists in the gap Leica leaves open: the SL3 cameras are gorgeous, but the brand has never been especially generous when it comes to bolt-on flexibility. Helium’s plate fills that void without ruining the camera’s lines, keeping everything low-profile and tucked into the body’s footprint.
Practical details to know:
- Price: US$320
- Material: CNC’d 6061-T6 aluminum, black anodized
- Compatibility: Leica SL3, SL3-S and SL3-P
- Mounting: Arca-Swiss, Peak Design Capture Clip and Travel Tripod, plus a 1/4-20 thread
Shipping began during the second week of June, so early preorders have already landed in hands. As of now the HeSL3 remains available to preorder, though Helium notes only a limited number of units are left. At US$320 it sits firmly in the premium-accessory bracket — but then again, so does every camera it’s designed to bolt onto.
