Focal has torn up parts of its own playbook with the Scala Utopia Evo M, a three-way floorstander that evolves the established Scala Utopia Evo around two headline changes: a fresh PRISM tweeter and a redesigned M-profile W midrange driver. The French brand describes the result as “an ode to the art of listening at home” — a lofty pitch, but the engineering underneath does the talking.
The PRISM tweeter is the star of the show. First seen in Focal’s high-end Diva Alta Utopia wireless system, it now migrates into a passive tower for the first time. Rather than the beryllium dome of earlier generations, it blends composite materials to balance lightness against damping — and Focal claims it lands an even higher level of rigidity than the beryllium unit it replaces. That’s a notable statement, given how long beryllium has been Focal’s calling card at this level.
The midrange is equally significant. The new M-profile W driver is lifted from the Utopia Main professional monitor range, with a structure engineered for what Focal calls “exceptional rigidity” and ultra-low distortion. The company promises mid-frequency reproduction that is “more transparent, precise and natural” than before — the band where voices and instruments live, and where cheaper drivers tend to smear detail.
Down low, the W woofer has been completely redesigned around a dual-ferrite motor, targeting “powerful, deep, controlled bass” rather than the bloated variety.
Beyond the new drivers, the Evo M leans on Focal’s established toolbox to keep everything coherent:
- TMD suspension to limit cone deformation and the distortion it creates
- Optimum Phase Crossover to reduce phase issues and adapt tonal balance to the room’s size and type
- Focus Time, an articulated spine that arcs the cabinet toward the listener to help time-align the drivers
Focal quotes 92dB sensitivity and a 3-ohm minimum impedance, so this is a speaker that appreciates a serious, current-capable amplifier — not an afterthought partner.
The whole exercise is aimed at “even more faithful and dynamic reproduction, capable of revealing the full richness of the most demanding recordings.” In other words: bring your best-mastered files and your patience.
The Scala Utopia Evo M was unveiled on 2 July 2026 and is available beginning August 2026. Pricing sits at $50,000 per pair in Black High Gloss, Off White High Gloss and Warm Taupe High Gloss, rising to $56,000 per pair for the Light Walnut (with Off White front panel) and Dark Walnut (with Sepia Brown front panel) finishes. This is unapologetically the top end of hi-fi — but for Focal devotees, the PRISM tweeter alone makes it a landmark.
