Light Lens Lab Film Camera. A rangefinder revival takes shape
SHARE

Light Lens Lab has built its reputation resurrecting legendary optics — faithful recreations of classic Leica glass at prices that don’t require selling a kidney. Now the company is pointing that same ambition at something far bigger: an all-new analog camera, built entirely from scratch.

The reveal came via Instagram on July 22, 2026, where Light Lens Lab showed off a 3D-printed prototype body. It’s a fairly straightforward-looking shape, but the silhouette is unmistakably that of a classic rangefinder — very much in the spirit of the M-mount lenses the company has spent years perfecting. The teaser is deliberately sparse, and for good reason: this is, in the company’s own words, “extremely early development.”

Not a lens spin-off

Crucially, Light Lens Lab told PetaPixel that this camera stands on its own. “We are also not related to any previous project that we worked on, like lenses and are creating something of our own,” the company said. “It will have automatic features and also new patent-pending technologies.”

What those technologies actually do remains a mystery — with a patent still pending, Light Lens Lab is understandably tight-lipped. The mention of “automatic features” is intriguing, though, hinting that this won’t be a purely mechanical throwback. The company describes the current unit as a “rough prototype,” so essentially everything is still on the table.

The bigger picture

This camera doesn’t exist in isolation. Light Lens Lab is simultaneously developing an all-new black-and-white film emulsion — a genuinely monumental undertaking — alongside new peel-apart film. Stack those projects on top of the lens catalog and a clear strategy emerges:

  • Lenses — recreations of coveted classic optics
  • Film — new black-and-white emulsion and peel-apart stock
  • Camera — an original rangefinder-style body

That’s an end-to-end analog photography system, all under one roof. It’s the kind of vertical ambition almost no one attempts anymore, and it explains the teaser tagline: “Recreating Legacy, Engineering Tomorrow.” The phrasing suggests Light Lens Lab wants to do for the classic rangefinder camera what it already does for classic rangefinder lenses — revive the form for a modern audience rather than clone a single specific model.

Don’t hold your breath

Anyone hoping to load a roll soon should temper expectations. Light Lens Lab has said there won’t be a formal announcement anytime soon, and it’s targeting a release window somewhere between 2027 and 2030. That’s a wide runway, which is honest for a product still living as a 3D print.

No model name, no specs, and no price have been shared — and given the stage of development, that’s exactly as it should be. What we do have is a company with a proven track record of turning ambitious analog dreams into shipping products, now taking on the hardest challenge of all: building a camera from a blank sheet.
