Aunt Gladys Prequel. Zach Cregger Confirms the Weapons Follow-Up Is Alive
SHARE

If you sat through Weapons in 2025 and walked out unable to stop thinking about Aunt Gladys, good news: the character is getting her own movie, and it’s actually happening. At Comic Con 2026, director Zach Cregger gave a status update that fans have been circling for months.

“It’s being written, is the short answer,” Cregger said, confirming that the Aunt Gladys-focused prequel has moved past the vague-idea stage and is now an active screenplay. That’s a meaningful step for a follow-up that could easily have lived and died as a hopeful comment in an interview.

Cregger didn’t stop at a simple yes. He teased that the film would be packed with “lots of twists and turns and mysteries and crazy things” — the kind of language that suggests he’s leaning into the same unsettling, unpredictable tone that made Weapons a talking point in the first place.

What makes this interesting is the shape of the project. A prequel built around Aunt Gladys implies a story that fills in the backstory rather than pushing the timeline forward, giving Cregger room to explore where the character came from and how she became the figure audiences met on screen. Prequels can be tricky — you already know roughly where things end up — but Cregger’s promise of mysteries and reversals hints he intends to keep viewers guessing anyway.

For now, that’s the extent of the confirmed detail. There’s no release window, no casting announcement, and no plot synopsis beyond the character focus and Cregger’s tonal tease. A script in progress is exactly that: in progress. Scripts get rewritten, projects shift, and “being written” is a long way from “in theaters.”

Still, the Comic Con update matters for one simple reason — it came directly from the director, on the record, at one of the biggest genre stages in the world. That’s about as official as an early-stage confirmation gets, and it puts the Aunt Gladys prequel firmly in the “real” column rather than the rumor pile.

Here’s where things stand:

  • Status: screenplay actively being written
  • Focus: a prequel centered on the character Aunt Gladys
  • Tone: promised “twists and turns and mysteries and crazy things”
  • Confirmed by: director Zach Cregger at Comic Con 2026

Everything else — dates, cast, title treatment — remains unknown. But if you were worried the Aunt Gladys story would stay locked inside Weapons, Cregger just handed you a reason to keep watching this space.
