GAM's PSC Gear Reducers. Bringing a core supplier's IP fully in-house

Vertical integration is one of those phrases that sounds like a boardroom buzzword until you see it play out in real hardware. GAM Enterprises just made it concrete: the company has taken ownership of the intellectual property behind Schaeffler’s PSC gear reducers, the precision gearing that already sits at the heart of its flagship GPL product line.

The move, completed on April 14, 2026, closes a potential gap in GAM’s supply chain. When a critical component comes from an outside supplier, you’re always at the mercy of someone else’s roadmap, lead times and priorities. By acquiring the PSC IP outright, GAM now controls that core technology from design through production.

To make it happen, the company spun up a dedicated subsidiary, GAM-Melior GmbH, based in Hameln, Germany. That entity will support and manufacture the PSC product going forward, giving GAM a European manufacturing foothold alongside ownership of the engineering behind the reducers.

Why does a gear reducer matter enough to build a subsidiary around it? In precision motion control, the reducer is where torque, backlash and accuracy get decided. It’s the unglamorous but decisive piece that determines how tightly a robotic axis or automated stage can hit its target. The PSC gearing serves exactly that role inside GAM’s GPL products, which means owning the IP isn’t a peripheral acquisition — it’s grabbing the crown jewel.

For GAM, the payoff is threefold:

  • Supply chain control — no longer depending on a single external supplier for a core component.
  • Expanded manufacturing — the GAM-Melior operation broadens what the company can build in-house.
  • Roadmap freedom — with the IP in hand, GAM can iterate on the technology at its own pace.

There’s a broader industry signal here too. As demand for precision motion in robotics and automation keeps climbing, component makers increasingly want to own the pieces that define their performance rather than license them. Acquiring a supplier’s IP and standing up your own production line is a heavier lift than a simple purchase order, but it’s also a bet that long-term control beats short-term convenience.

For customers already building around GAM’s GPL products, the practical upshot should be steadier availability and a company that fully understands — because it now owns — the gearing at the core of its own catalog. That’s the kind of quiet infrastructure move that rarely makes headlines but tends to matter when you’re the one waiting on parts.

Neither pricing nor detailed specifications for the PSC reducers were disclosed, but the strategic logic is clear enough: GAM would rather build the heart of its products itself than buy it.
