Kodak Verita 200D. The Euphoria film stock you can't actually buy

Some films you find on a shelf. This one you find through a friend in the industry who happens to have a full roll of the exact stock a hit TV show shot on. That’s the entire origin story of my rolls of Kodak Verita 200D — a motion picture film Kodak engineered for Euphoria season three, respooled by hand into 35mm canisters and handed over as a favor.

Here’s the crucial detail: you cannot walk into a store and pick this up. There is no consumer version of Verita 200D. Kodak doesn’t sell it to still photographers, full stop.

To be precise about what this stock actually is:

  • It is a motion picture film, built for cinema productions that burn through hundreds of thousands of feet at a time — not for someone loading three rolls into a weekend camera.
  • It is available only by request through a Kodak sales representative, the kind of relationship a production company has, not an individual.
  • There is no 135 version and no 120 version. Nothing you can order online, nothing with a retail price tag.

That distribution model is the whole point. Verita 200D exists to serve a specific creative brief on a specific production, and its look was tuned for the screen aesthetic that show wanted. It was never conceived as a product line for photographers, which is exactly why getting a canister of it feels less like a purchase and more like smuggling something out the back door of a studio lab.

Shooting it as still film, then, is a bit of an exercise in going against the grain. This is emulsion designed to run through a movie camera at 24 frames a second, graded and processed inside a cinema pipeline, being coaxed into single frames instead. There’s a certain thrill in that — using a professional cinema stock the way it was never intended to be used, purely to see what a photographer can pull out of it.

The takeaway isn’t a shopping recommendation, because you genuinely can’t shop for this. Verita 200D sits in that odd category of gear you can only encounter through connections and luck, a reminder that a lot of the most interesting materials in imaging never make it to a checkout page. Kodak’s consumer and prosumer film lineup is one thing; the stocks it quietly builds for individual productions are another world entirely, and most photographers will never touch them.

So consider this less a review and more a field report from behind a rope you’re not usually allowed past. If a roll of Verita 200D ever finds its way into your hands, treat it as the rarity it is — because officially, for anyone outside a film set, it doesn’t exist for you to buy at all.
