Retoucher of the Year 2026. Photographers wanted for a global editing showdown
SHARE

Ever handed your raw files to someone else and let them work their magic? That’s the whole premise behind the Retoucher of the Year competition, which has thrown open its doors to photographers willing to donate their images to the cause. The idea is simple but slightly nerve-racking for control freaks: you supply the shots, and the world’s sharpest retouching talent transforms them.

This is a contest built entirely around post-production — the often invisible craft that turns a decent capture into a jaw-dropping final frame. While photography competitions usually crown the person behind the lens, this one shines a light on the artists working in the layers, masks and curves after the shutter closes.

For photographers, the appeal is twofold. First, there’s the curiosity factor: seeing your own composition reinterpreted by a professional retoucher can be genuinely revealing, exposing potential you never spotted in your own edit. Second, it’s a low-effort way to be part of a high-profile creative event without entering the editing arena yourself.

The organisers are casting a wide net, and the range of usable material is broad. Whether you shoot:

  • Portraits crying out for skin and lighting refinement
  • Landscapes ready for tonal and atmospheric work
  • Product or commercial shots that lean on precision compositing
  • Conceptual or fine-art frames waiting for a bold reinterpretation

…there’s likely a place for your files in the mix. The stronger and more versatile the source image, the more a retoucher has to play with — so this isn’t just a dumping ground for outtakes.

Timing matters here. The photographer open call closes on 6 September 2026, so anyone thinking about contributing needs to get their submissions sorted before then. From there, the competition builds toward its climax: the global final takes place in early December 2026, where the best retouching work will be judged and celebrated.

It’s a refreshing inversion of the usual creative hierarchy. In an era where AI tools and one-click filters have flattened much of the retouching landscape, a contest that puts genuine human skill front and centre feels almost defiant. The retoucher’s craft — the patience, the eye for detail, the restraint to know when enough is enough — deserves its own spotlight, and this competition provides exactly that.

If you’ve got a folder of images gathering digital dust, this is a chance to see them reborn in unexpected ways. Hand over your best work, sit back, and watch what a professional can do with it. Just remember the clock is ticking toward that September deadline.
