A phone with a film festival credit before it has an official spec sheet. Honor put the Magic9 Pro Max on public display for the first time at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, held on the Lido di Venezia from September 2 to 12, 2026. The formal announcement of the Magic9 series, the Pro Max included, is set for September 28.
Two things carried the appearance. One was a distinctive moss green finish. The other, more telling, was the ARRI logo sitting on the camera module. That badge is not decoration. Honor and the German cinema camera maker run what they call a Cinematic Imaging Partnership, and its first commercial product, the HONOR Robot Phone, launched on August 12, 2026 in China with a “co-engineered with ARRI” designation, according to ARRI’s own press release.
The camera hardware is also meant to read as a nod to the partner. Honor says the Magic9 Pro Max’s lens arrangement “takes inspiration from the design language of one of ARRI’s most iconic cinema cameras”. What that produces is a wide raised island with one dominant central lens flanked by two smaller ones, an accent colour breaking up the lower half of the back.
On the software side, the partnership has so far brought three named ARRI pieces to Honor’s mobile imaging platform: ARRI LogC3, which holds on to more highlight and shadow detail for grading, ARRI Wide Gamut 3 for a broader colour space, and ARRI Looks for controlled cinematic colour styles applied while shooting. Honor’s own phrasing is that “selected elements of ARRI’s renowned image science and professional cinema workflow have been adapted for use in a smartphone, giving creators greater flexibility during production while preserving creative control throughout post-production”.
ARRI is not treating this as a licensing sideline. “The HONOR Robot Phone is an important milestone in ARRI’s expansion into Content Creation,” said David Bermbach, Chief Product Officer of ARRI. The two companies also set up a joint imaging technology lab covering sensor optics, cinema workflows and AI-era imaging standards.
Everything else about the Magic9 Pro Max remains at the rumour stage, and Honor has confirmed none of it. The leaked camera list that keeps circulating goes:
- a 200MP main camera on a 1/1.28″ type sensor
- a 50MP ultrawide
- a 200MP periscope telephoto on a 1/1.4″ type sensor
- a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chipset
Treat that as unverified until the launch. Pricing and global availability are unknown, with the September 28 unveiling expected to start in China. Until then, the strongest evidence Honor has offered is a green phone photographed on a red carpet, wearing the name of a company whose cameras shot the films playing a few metres away.
