Atomos Shinobi 7 II. The brightest Shinobi yet stares down the sun

Shooting outdoors has always exposed the weak spot of on-camera monitors: the moment the sun clears the treeline, your carefully judged exposure turns into guesswork on a washed-out panel. Atomos used IBC 2026 in Amsterdam on September 11, 2026 to answer that with the Shinobi 7 II, a 7-inch, ultra-slim HDR monitor with a peak brightness of 2,800 nits — the brightest display the Shinobi line has carried.

The panel is a 1920 x 1080 touchscreen, and it accepts HDMI input up to 4Kp30. A single USB-C connection handles three jobs at once: camera control, power delivery and display calibration. That last one matters more than it sounds, because a monitor you can calibrate on set is a monitor you can actually trust when the grade comes back.

Camera control is the part working shooters will notice first. From the display, you can set aperture, shutter speed (or angle), ISO and white balance, and tap the screen to pull focus. Atomos lists support across a wide range of bodies, including popular models from Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, Panasonic and Sony.

The analysis toolkit is the familiar professional spread, delivered in real time:

  • Exposure — waveform, histogram, RGB parade, zebras and false color
  • Focus — focus peaking plus touch-to-focus on compatible cameras
  • Framing — anamorphic de-squeeze and custom frame guides

The HDR display handles log, HLG and PQ signals, and lets users monitor up to 10 stops of dynamic range. Built-in 3D LUT support puts a real-time preview of the intended look on screen, which is the difference between staring at flat log footage and seeing something close to the finished shot. The list of supported log formats is broad: Arri Log, Canon CLog/CLog 2/CLog 3, Fujifilm F-Log, JVC JLog, Nikon N-Log, Sony SLog/SLog2/SLog3, Panasonic Vlog and RED Log. Audio monitoring runs over HDMI or through the 3.5mm analog input and output.

Atomos CEO Peter Barber framed the release around size and sightlines rather than raw spec-sheet muscle. “The Shinobi range has become one of the industry’s most trusted on-camera monitors because it delivers the tools creators need without unnecessary complexity,” he said. “With Shinobi 7 II we’re giving customers the option of a larger 7-inch display that’s still incredibly lightweight, well-balanced and comfortable to use on-camera. The 2800nit HDR display gives creators the confidence to make critical focus and exposure decisions outdoors, even in direct sunlight.”

Pricing lands at $499, with availability through authorized retailers in September 2026. That puts it alongside rather than above the Shinobi II that Atomos released in 2024, a functionally identical monitor built around a smaller, dimmer 5-inch, 1500-nit display for $349. The choice, in other words, is a straightforward one: two extra inches and nearly double the brightness for $150 more.
