Funselektor Over the Hill. Art of Rally team swaps speed for mud and patience

Some driving games reward you for going fast. Over the Hill rewards you for going slowly. The new off-road exploration game from Funselektor Labs, the studio behind the stylish retro racer Art of Rally, has no lap times and no leaderboards. Built with help from Strelka Games, it’s about reading the terrain, picking a line up a muddy slope and getting over the next ridge in one piece. Its own store page says it plainly: “This is a driving game, not a racing game.”

The full game launches on Windows PC on October 14, 2026. A demo was already on Steam when Polygon published its hands-on preview on September 24, 2026. Versions for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are planned for 2027.

Toy-like classics, real-world trouble

Like Art of Rally, Over the Hill uses unlicensed, toy-like versions of late-20th-century classics. Polygon spotted a Land Rover Defender lookalike called the Protector, a Toyota Land Cruiser stand-in called the Roamer and a Mercedes G-Wagon look-alike called the Sentinel. The demo has one map, Emerald Lake, a Canadian Alpine landscape of fir forests, lakes and muddy trails that climb into the mountains. Funselektor renders it in its trademark clean, low-poly style with warm autumn colors and hazy lighting.

The structure is simple. You scour the map for:

  • abandoned crates holding cosmetic upgrades for your truck, such as fenders, lights, spare wheels, shovels and roof racks loaded with camping gear or kayaks;
  • trail challenges and scenic viewpoints;
  • item recovery missions (in the demo, you tow a stranded Land Rover to safety);
  • cabins that double as fast-travel points.

You’ll need those cabins, because getting stuck is part of the game. In Polygon’s preview, the reviewer drowned the engine in a river, sank into a peat bog, slid down a wet slope, beached the truck on a rock and rolled it onto its side. If a tree is close enough, a winch can save you. Planks help you bridge gaps. Dynamic weather, a day/night cycle and what Funselektor calls “realistic terrain deformation” keep the trails changing.

Solo calm or four-truck convoy

You can play alone or in online co-op with up to three friends. According to the Steam listing, the full game also adds meteorites, portals to new areas, merchants for vehicle customization, and wildlife you can photograph to fill out a compendium. There’s also a built-in photo mode. Polygon compares the feel to Jusant, Cairn, Death Stranding’s hiking and Saber Interactive’s SnowRunner series. It calls the game the calm “anti-Forza Horizon”: practically perfect as a mind-cleansing solo experience once you learn to shift into low gear and stop rushing.

The bar to entry is modest. Steam lists minimum requirements as Windows 10 (64-bit), an Intel Core i5-7400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600, 8 GB of RAM, an Nvidia GTX 1070 or AMD Radeon RX 5600, and 4 GB of storage, tested at Full HD. Full controller support is included, and the developers recommend a gamepad.
