For years, Linux has been the neglected sibling in the VPN world — powerful under the hood, but often the last platform to get the features that Windows, macOS and mobile users take for granted. Proton VPN is chipping away at that gap, and its most censorship-relevant tool is now on the roadmap: the Stealth protocol is set to arrive on the Linux client.
Stealth is Proton VPN’s proprietary obfuscation protocol. Instead of simply tunneling your traffic, it disguises that traffic so it doesn’t look like VPN traffic at all. That distinction matters enormously in places where deep packet inspection and aggressive firewalls are used to sniff out and block VPN connections outright. A standard encrypted tunnel can be detected and dropped; an obfuscated one is designed to slip past unnoticed, blending in with ordinary encrypted web traffic.
The practical upshot is straightforward. If you’re behind a restrictive network — a repressive national firewall, a locked-down corporate setup, or a school or campus network that blocks VPNs — Stealth is built to keep your connection alive where other protocols get throttled or severed. It’s the kind of feature that separates a convenience tool from a genuine lifeline for people who rely on circumvention to reach the open internet.
Bringing it to Linux is a meaningful move. The desktop Linux community skews toward privacy-conscious users, developers and people operating in exactly the kinds of environments where anti-censorship tooling earns its keep. Until now, Stealth has been the domain of Proton VPN’s other apps, leaving Linux users to lean on the standard protocol lineup.
A word on where things actually stand. Stealth support on Linux was announced as part of Proton VPN’s 2026 roadmap, and it is not yet live in the Linux app. Proton VPN’s own documentation still lists it as pending, and the company has flagged that some users — including those on Snap packages — will need to wait a little longer for a cluster of features, split tunneling and ARM support among them.
So this is a promise rather than a shipping product, and it’s worth setting expectations accordingly:
