Denon AVR-X2900H. Four years later, the mid-range gets serious about calibration
SHARE

Four years is a long time to wait for a new mid-range home cinema amplifier, but Denon has finally refreshed its bread-and-butter receiver line with the AVR-X2900H. The headline isn’t raw power — it’s the calibration smarts that trickle down from far pricier gear.

The big talking point is Dirac Live support up to 11.4CH, a room-correction system that until recently felt reserved for enthusiast-tier kit. Pair that with Denon’s enhanced processing and a genuinely handy real-time channel level monitor — a live readout of what each channel is actually doing — and you have a receiver that invites tinkering rather than punishing it.

Under the lid, the AVR-X2900H is a 7.2-channel AV receiver delivering up to 95 watts per channel (at 8 ohms). That’s respectable for a mid-range box, and it’s fed by a 32-bit multi-channel DAC architecture that keeps the signal path clean from source to speaker.

On the surround format front, Denon covers the essentials and then some:

  • Dolby Atmos and Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization
  • DTS:X and DTS Virtual:X

The virtualization modes matter for real rooms where ceiling speakers simply aren’t happening — you get a taste of height effects without drilling into plaster.

Video handling is thoroughly modern, too, with 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz pass-through. That 4K/120Hz spec is the one gamers will care about, keeping the receiver relevant for high-refresh console and PC play rather than acting as a bottleneck between source and screen.

Connectivity leans on Denon’s ecosystem strengths. There’s integrated HEOS multiroom streaming for whole-home audio, plus Bluetooth and Apple AirPlay 2 for quick casting from a phone or laptop. It’s the kind of setup that works as happily for a Sunday-morning playlist as it does for a Saturday-night blockbuster.

The AVR-X2900H was announced on May 14, 2026, and is now on sale through authorized retailers. Pricing lands at US$1,349 / £899 / €1,000, which slots it squarely into that competitive mid-range bracket where features per dollar decide the argument.

So, has the four-year wait been worth it? On paper, Denon has done the smart thing: rather than chase a horsepower war, it’s pushed room correction, live diagnostics and future-proof video through into a price point where those tools genuinely change how a system sounds. Dirac Live up to 11.4CH on a sub-US$1,400 receiver is the sort of thing that would have sounded implausible a few years ago. For anyone building or upgrading a mid-range home cinema, the AVR-X2900H makes a strong case for itself.
