D&D World of Warcraft. Azeroth invades the tabletop with a full-blown crossover
SHARE

Wizards of the Coast is borrowing a page from its own Magic: The Gathering playbook. The company’s Universes Beyond strategy — the same idea that dropped Warhammer, Doctor Who and Assassin’s Creed cards into Magic — is now coming to Dungeons & Dragons, and the first stop is the world of Azeroth.

D&D: World of Warcraft is a full gameplay expansion that lets you run a fifth-edition campaign in Blizzard’s MMO universe. This isn’t a token cosmetic tie-in: the book is stuffed with mechanics designed to make the crossover actually playable at the table.

Here’s what’s inside:

  • 11 new species, enough to play any World of Warcraft race you fancy
  • 26 magic items and 60 new spells
  • 30 “dungeon boss” statblocks for dungeon masters to throw at the party
  • Rules for mounts, companion creatures and professions — the connective tissue that makes Azeroth feel like Azeroth

The package goes beyond the rulebook, too. It ships with a DM screen, miniatures, and the Icecrown Citadel Adventure Map Pack, which bundles in a Level 16–20 digital adventure. In other words, you get a high-level campaign ready to roll, plus the physical bits to run it, without cobbling everything together yourself.

Collectors get options as well. The book comes with three different covers: a standard cover, a hobby store cover, and a Collector’s Edition emblazoned with the Horde and Alliance logos — a nice little flex for anyone who’s ever argued which faction is superior.

Pre-orders opened on July 30, 2026. Early access launches on November 3, 2026, with the full retail release following on November 17, 2026.

The bigger story here is strategic. Magic’s Universes Beyond line has been a runaway commercial success, pulling in players who came for the license and stayed for the game. Bringing that model to D&D signals that Wizards sees crossovers not as one-off stunts but as a repeatable engine — and World of Warcraft, with its two-decade lore and instantly recognizable roster of races and villains, is an ideal proof of concept. If Sylvanas and Arthas can headline a D&D sourcebook, plenty of other franchises could follow.

For tabletop veterans, the appeal is obvious: a ready-made setting with familiar factions, plus enough new species, spells and statblocks to keep even seasoned parties busy. For lapsed WoW players, it’s a chance to revisit Azeroth around a table instead of a login screen. Either way, D&D’s Universes Beyond era starts with a heavyweight.
