WIRED has launched a dedicated app for iPhone and Android. The app was introduced on September 16, 2026, and is free to download. The publisher calls it the best way to read, watch and listen to its journalism, which sums up the idea: one place for written stories, video and audio, where readers once had to hop between a browser, a video player and a podcast app.
The pitch is simple. WIRED says it publishes exclusive, future-looking journalism every day, and the app is meant to give readers more ways to get through it. Instead of a plain list of headlines, the app is organized around a few distinct experiences.
- Daily Digest. A personalized summary designed to catch readers up on the best of WIRED, with the stated aim of letting people make WIRED their own.
- Watch tab. A section for original video, vertical podcasts and other visual formats that take a story beyond the text.
- Listening. Podcasts, narrated stories and playlists for the commute, the gym or anywhere else a screen isn’t practical.
- Community. Comment sections plus live AMAs with WIRED journalists and experts.
- Alerts. Push notifications for breaking stories as soon as they go live.
The feature list says a lot about where digital publishing is heading. Vertical podcasts are video podcasts framed for a phone held upright, the same format that short-video platforms have trained audiences to expect. By putting them in their own tab next to original video, WIRED is treating its app less like a digital newsstand and more like a media hub. Narrated stories and playlists go the other way, turning long reads into something you can listen to without looking at the screen.
The personalized Daily Digest is the other key piece. News apps live or die by whether people open them every day, and a tailored daily summary gives readers a reason to come back. Pair that with breaking-news alerts and the app covers both the slow morning catch-up and the urgent headline.
The live AMAs are the most interactive part. Readers can put questions directly to WIRED journalists and outside experts in the app, which is a different relationship from scrolling past a story on social media.
WIRED’s announcement doesn’t explain how the free app fits with its paid subscription or which stories, if any, need a subscription inside the app. Links to both app stores are on wired.com/app.
For WIRED readers, the app is a single place to read, watch and listen instead of juggling several apps and browser tabs.
